Julia Fluss Ubbenga Norma Was a Gem February 4, 2012

I have always been grateful that Norma hired me to work for her at the Surrey during the summer of 1975.  My dad knew Norma from his many years around Decatur and she was willing to hire me when I was home from college.  She was always pleasant and easy to work for there.  It almost felt like a family there.  Some of the names I can remember and some I can't, but we worked well together and enjoyed being in one of Decatur's finest restaurants.

Norma was very steady and professional.  I don't ever recall her getting upset with people.  I think all of the staff liked her and trusted her.  She knew the business and turned out great food, especially the pies!  It was a special place with lovely decor.  Many in Decatur were pleased to see Norma keep the Surrey going in Decatur.  Norma was a gem.

I am writing for my mother, Mildred Grove Slifer. Mom and Norma grew up together near Stewardson IL. Mom was delighted when Norma married Mom's brother George and became a part of our family. Mom is heartbroken with the loss of Norma. Norma was a wonderful addition to our family. We loved that pretty smile and her great sense of humor. Mom (92)  will miss her lifelong friend. You have our sympathies.
